Some Senators in the Nigerian Senate have begun a demand for
the resignation of Babachir David Lawal, the Secretary to the Government of the
Federation (SGF)
Babachir Lawal has come under intense scrutiny in the
investigation in the Presidential Initiative For The North East (PINE), a fund
created to finance critical infrastructure in the North Eastern region. Rocked
by attacks from Book Hiram terrorists for years, many Internally displaced
persons are at the risk of starvation in the region.
A Senate Committee which probed the Presidential initiative
found that the sum of N250 million could not be accounted for. The initiative
was found to have donated N50 million to an NGO and awarded a contract sum of
over N100 for the eradication of grass at an IDP camp.
Sources within the Senate have said the controversial
contract to clear grass in the IDP camp was awarded to a company owned by the
SGF and they are now demanding he be sacked. The call for his removal comes on
the day President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to present the proposed 2017
budget to the Senate.
