Over 22 people went missing when nearly 10 vehicles,
including two state transport buses, fell into the Savitri river after a
section of the Mumbai-Goa highway bridge near Mahad collapsed in Raigad
district late on Tuesday night
The bridge, built more than seven decades ago during the
British rule, gave way around midnight due to the heavy rains which flooded the
river.
Preliminary reports suggest around 10 vehicles, unable to
see the collapsed bridge in the dark, fell into the river.
Indian Navy’s SeaKing 42C has reached the spot near Mahad
for a rescue and survey operation. The chopper dropped a diving team near the
bridge.
Government says the National Highway Authority of India had
declared the bridge to be safe for use just two months back. Hence it was not
closed for the traffic.
