Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Thursday he is
inviting U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and EU officials to visit the
country for a debate over alleged extrajudicial killings in an ongoing war on
drugs, local media reported.
“I am inviting the United Nations … I am inviting the EU,”
Duterte was quoted as saying in a speech given only partly in English. “Send
the best lawyer of your town,” he said, adding he had already ordered the
letter of invitation to be written.
On Tuesday, Duterte said “I will tell [the EU], ‘f–k you,'”
after members of the European Parliament expressed concern over the high death
toll “during police operations in the context of an intensified anti-crime and
anti-drug campaign.”
The last 10 weeks has seen over 3,500 people killed in
relation to the illegal drug trade, Reuters reported, citing local police, with
nearly two-thirds of the deaths at the hands of unknown perpetrators.
