TURKISH police have arrested dozens of senior Islamic State
militants thought to be heading to the Middle East to bolster the jihadi's
dwindling army, ahead of a string of final battles for the caliphate in Iraq.
Eighty-one suspected jihadis were detained in raids across
Turkey amid fears ISIS is embarking on an eleventh-hour recruitment drive as it
suffers heavy losses in Iraq.
Concerns are growing that ISIS is also looking to swell its
numbers in its de factor capital Raqqa, setting the group up for an almighty
battle with US and UK-backed forces in the Syrian city, possibly next year.
Authorities detained 21 people suspected of being senior
figures in the ISIS network, Turkish media said.
Sixty foreign nationals were also arrested in a string of
anti-terror operations at 31 locations in six Turkish provinces.
The arrests were centred in Istanbul - Turkey's largest city
- which has been hit by numerous terrorist attacks in recent years.
President Reccep Tayyip Erdogan has ordered frequent raids
on suspected jihadist safe-houses in Istanbul and other cities in a massive
terror crackdown.
They come as ISIS is dealt a huge blow by an offensive to
retake the Iraqi city of Mosul.
