In what is seen as a sharp reaction to the mixed reactions that have greeted the controversial resignation of Pastor Enoch Adeboye as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG on Saturday, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate removal and the replacement of the Executive Secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRN), Jim Obazee.
Though no reason was given for his removal, President Buhari who ordered the immediate reconstitution of the board has appointed a Chairman and a new Executive Secretary for the council.
The new Council as approved by the President has Mr Adedotun Sulaiman, MFR as Chairman. Mr. Sulaiman was a former Managing Partner/Director of Arthur Anderson and later, Accenture. He is a Chartered Accountant and a product of the University of Lagos and Harvard Business School.
The President has also approved the appointment of Mr. Daniel Asapokhai as the Executive Secretary of the Council. Mr. Asopokhai is a partner and a Financial Reporting Specialist at the PricewaterHouseCoopers (PWC), Nigeria. He is a product of the University of Lagos and the University of Pretoria. President Muhammadu Buhari has also instructed the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment to invite the nineteen ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government and private sector organizations specified in the FRC Act to nominate members of the board of the council.
The DailyBells Nigeria reports that shortly after the resignation of the revered cleric went viral on Saturday, the church, had cited government’s new legal requirements set up by the Financial Regulations Council, guiding all registered churches, mosques, CSOs as reasons for the sudden resignation of Adeboye popularly referred to as Daddy G.O.
The statement clarified that heads of non profit organisations like churches now have a maximum period of twenty years to lead their organizations. In retirement, they are not permitted to hand over to their families. While the controversy lasted, the searchlight was beamed on the Jim Obazee, the FRN boss. Obazee, a senior pastor with the RCCG was alleged to have been on a vendetta move to get back at Adeboye who sometimes ago put him on suspension. Obazee was believed to have forced Adeboye to resign as the G.O in accordance with the FRCN law on non-for-profit organisations in the country.
