ALL HAIL EMMANUEL MACRON! THE HOPE OF THE EU

The European Union might breathe the air of peace if and only if the centrist candidate who succeeded into the second round of the French election on Sunday along with right-wing Eurosceptic Marine Le Pen progresses again to victory.

France has seen has a rise of Euroscepticism over recent years, with Ms Le Pen and hard-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon both floating the idea of a French exit from the EU if elected.

Mr Macron, however, was the only candidate among the four frontrunners who was in favour of the idea of closer European integration during his hard-fought campaign.

Addressing journalists, a special adviser to Mr Macron, the man who is now favourite to become the Republic’s president next month had assured he will work to end populist movements, citing Donald Trump becoming US President as an example.  “We’re at a turning point after Trump’s election, it’s a global challenge.”

Asked about whether the pro-EU 39-year-old can provide enough reform for the Brussels bloc in order for it to survive, the MEP said: “We hope and I trust him for doing so. Not only in France, but we really want to change Europe.  Either we stick to multilateral cooperation of states, or we will go back to nationalism

At his post-election party in south Paris, supporters of the centrists waved both French and EU flags.

His victory was welcomed by both Brussels and Berlin on Sunday, with the German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel describing it as “great for Europe”.

Continuing on Radio 4’s Today programme, Ms Goulard seemed to make a subtle dig at Brexit, as she railed against the idea of separation.

Christopher Dickey says a Le Pen win is “the end of the world”
She said: “Either we stick to multilateral cooperation of states, or we will go back to nationalism that will bring us nowhere because when you face climate change or terrorism, you need to cooperate with other countries.”

Meanwhile, Ms Le Pen said the “survival of France” was at stake when the country returns to the polls for the final vote on May 7.

Speaking after it was announced she’d made it through to the second round, the firebrand said: ““Come out of these outdated quarrels and resentments.
