Voters in Edo State will today throng the polling booths to elect a new governor of the state. The election was shifted to today from September 10 after the Police and the Department of State Security (DSS) alleged plot by insurgents to attack the state. The security agencies therefore called for its postponement, a proposal which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reluctantly accepted.
Ahead of the election, which features candidates from 19 political parties, INEC and the police said they were ready for a hitch-free exercise. The race is however being narrowed to the candidates of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and the All Progressives Congress (APC’s) Godwin Obaseki.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, has counselled political parties contesting the election to shun violence and discourage their supporters from acts that will compromise the electoral process. In a statement, the group on Tuesday in Benin City, asked INEC and security agencies not to handle logistics challenges with kid gloves.
The group’s Convener, Clement Nwankwo, said more than 70 civil society organisations have been accredited as observers for the election. He urged security agents assigned to election duty to exercise restraints in dealing with voters by avoiding acts of intimidation and inappropriate use of force capable of undermining the electoral process.
